Sleep Cycle
A short design project focused on the experience of waking up
Final Prototype
Problem/Situation
How might we design a better, more enjoyable waking up experience?
Quick Ideation + Brainstorming
Brainstorm for Ideas:
Changing (LED) light
Combining alarm and routine check-in device
Keeping yourself on track! (time reminders)
Incorporating prep for the next day -->App intervention
Mindfulness practice when you initially wake up (meditation/breathing)
Vitamin D lamp
Multipurpose lamp
Could hold things in the center: phone, watches, etc…
Plays a randomized sound every time it recognizes a sound (a person talking)
Purpose is to make user feel uncomfortable in order to wake up earlier
Combination of sound and lighting and vibration
Customizable
When people use new product, 5 question diagnostic quiz
Fun element to include. ask users bedtime routine, wakeup routine, schedule
What features would be good for them to have/not have
Takeaways
Final Idea:
App integration + Lamp + Customizable
Concentrating on having an atypical schedule
Research
Establishing schedules and routines are very helpful
Position behavior support systems (PBS)
Identifying tasks to complete, making lists, establishing routine
Pictures and visualizations of steps helpful
Fluorescent lightning a no-go
Should be careful with type of light, or maybe adjusting sensitivity
Ideas
Having a regular wakeup and bedtime is very helpful!
Perhaps explore other modes of signal other than light
Age Range
12 + (Middle-schoolers and higher)
Light brightness - adjustable
Applies to others (those not on the spectrum)
Atypical schedule
How to improve waking up process
Consistent with bedtime and waking up
Pre-bedtime routine
Limit screen time before bed
Alarm system
Wake up lights
Thoughts
Light can mimic sunrise to tell body to get up
Plug in or battery powered?
Display time
Body adjusts over time, if you do something for long enough your body will just know > perhaps will not always need to use it
Might not work for those who have sleeping disorders
